Genus
Aniara
1 species
*Aniara* is a monotypic Neotropical tiger beetle genus, its single species cloaked in jet-black, non-metallic integument unlike most of its iridescent relatives. Active after dark along sandy riverbanks and floodplain margins, it belongs to the broad-headed Megacephalini tribe. Its larvae develop in burrows within riparian substrates.
Diagnosis
DIAGNOSIS — *Aniara* Hope, 1838. Body 14–20 mm, oval, robust. Dorsum entirely jet-black, matte, without metallic reflections. Head broad (Megacephalini facies); eyes large, less protuberant than diurnal Cicindelini. Pronotum subquadrate. Elytra elongate-oval, dark. Fully winged. Nocturnal; larvae in riparian sand/floodplain clay burrows. Monotypic; no confusion genera recorded within Cicindelidae.
Etymology
Origin obscure — possibly mythological (Aniara as a poetic Swedish figure post-dates W. Horn 1899; alternative: Greek *aniaros*, grievous).
