Genus

Cassolaia

2 species

*Cassolaia* Wiesner, 1985 is a monotypic tiger beetle genus haunting the salt lake margins and halophytic bare clays of the western Mediterranean. Its single species — *Cassolaia maura* (Linnaeus, 1758) — is a small, metallic-coloured nocturnal hunter tied to some of the harshest saline landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb. This striking habitat fidelity to exposed, salt-crusted substrates sets *Cassolaia* apart from most Palaearctic Cicindelina.

Diagnosis

DIAGNOSIS — *Cassolaia* Wiesner, 1985. Body small, 11–15 mm; shape oval; L:W ratio 2–3. Coloration metallic with pale spots; fully winged. Head wider than pronotum; eyes medium; labrum transverse. Pronotum subquadrate. Elytra with metallic ground colour and maculation. Nocturnal; restricted to saline/clay substrates (salt lake margins, halophytic bare clay). Palaearctic distribution (W. Mediterranean). Monotypic; no confusion genera recorded.

Etymology

Named after F. Cassola (Italian entomologist, prolific "Studies on Tiger Beetles" series I-CXX+, 1970s-2010); feminine ending -aia.
