Genus

Leptognatha

33 species

*Leptognatha* Rivalier, 1963 is a genus of roughly twenty-three species of tiger beetles endemic to Australia, where they inhabit open, wet environments with bare sandy or clay substrates. Their slender, cylindrical bodies — typically around 12 mm — display a striking metallic coloration that sets them apart in the Australian fauna. True to their name, derived from the Greek for "slender-jawed," these beetles are exclusively nocturnal hunters, emerging after dark to pursue prey across open ground. Fully winged and agile, *Leptognatha* represents one of the most distinctive lineages within the Australian Cicindelidae.

Diagnosis

DIAGNOSIS — *Leptognatha* Rivalier, 1963 Body 8–15 mm, elongate-cylindrical (L:W > 3.0), fully winged. Coloration metallic. Head wider than pronotum; eyes medium. Labrum transverse. Pronotum subquadrate. Elytra elongate. Mandibles slender relative to body size (etymology-consistent). Habitat: open wet environments on bare sandy or clay substrate; activity strictly nocturnal. Distribution: Australian endemic (~23 spp.). Type species: *Cicindela cyanea* Klug, 1832, by subsequent designation. No confusion genera recorded.

Etymology

From Greek *leptós* (slender, thin) + *gnáthos* (jaw) — "slender-jawed".
