After dusk on South American riverbanks and sandy beaches, *Metriocheila* Thomson, 1857 emerges as a solitary nocturnal predator — one of the most distinctive Megacephalini of the Neotropics. This monotypic genus is known from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Argentina, where adults hunt along riparian margins and larvae develop in moist soil burrows.
Diagnosis
DIAGNOSIS — *Metriocheila* Thomson, 1857. Monotypic. Body 18–25 mm, depressed; Megacephalini broad-head habitus; metallic with pale spots; fully winged. Nocturnal. Labrum transverse. Aedeagal morphology diagnostic; separated from sympatric *Tetracha* and *Phaeoxantha* by aedeagal structure.
Etymology
From Greek *métrios* (moderate, medium) + *cheíla*/χεῖλος (lip/labrum) — describing intermediate labral proportions.
