Oxycheila — 21 species in Brazil

*Oxycheila* Dejean, 1825 is a robust, metallic Neotropical tiger beetle genus of approximately 52 species, haunting moist riparian banks and humid forest floors across South America. Nocturnal pursuit hunters, adults shelter near clay-loam substrates where larvae excavate vertical burrows. Males bear strikingly elongated mandibles, a sexually dimorphic feature linked to copulatory grasping behavior.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Oxycheila* Dejean, 1825. Body 12–22 mm, robust, metallic, oval (L:W <2.0); labrum dagger-shaped; mandibles sexually dimorphic (♂ elongated); nocturnal; larvae in vertical clay burrows. Tribal characters follow Oxycheilini.

Mesochila — 14 species in Brazil

*Mesochila* is a small genus of ten metallic tiger beetles inhabiting the forests of the Neotropical region, from Central America south through the Amazon basin. These slender, cylindrical beetles are nocturnal hunters, stalking prey across bare clay-loam and sandy clay substrates on the forest floor. Their metallic coloration — ranging through bronze, green, and brown — provides striking camouflage amid the dappled light of Amazonian forest interiors.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Mesochila* (Mesochila) Rivalier, 1969. Body 9–14 mm, elongate-cylindrical (L:W ratio 2–3). Coloration metallic. Eyes medium. Labrum subquadrate. Wings fully developed. Nocturnal. Habitat: Neotropical forest; substrate bare clay-loam, sandy clay, or forest floor. Separated from other Odontocheilina by combination of cylindrical habitus, medium eyes, subquadrate labrum, and Neotropical …

Pentacomia — 14 species in Brazil

Hidden in the forest canopy of Central and South America, *Pentacomia* beetles spend their lives on bark and branches, hunting by night. This small Neotropical genus, described by Bates in 1872, comprises 12 species ranging across the Amazon basin and into southern Brazil and Bolivia. Unlike most tiger beetles that patrol sun-baked ground, *Pentacomia* is a committed arboreal specialist, with larvae tunneling through bark rather than soil. The genus is remarkable within Cicindelidae for its unique protarsal morphology: the first four protarsomeres are not dilated in males, a condition found in no other member of the family.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Pentacomia* Bates, 1872. Body 8–13 mm, elongate-cylindrical (L:W ratio 2–3), fully winged. Coloration metallic. Eyes medium. Labrum transverse. Nocturnal; strictly arboreal, on bark and branches in Neotropical forests; larvae in bark burrows. Protarsomeres 1–4 of male NOT dilated — uniform protarsal form in both sexes; unique within Cicindelidae and Odontocheilina. Separated from *Oxy…

Phaeoxantha — 11 species in Brazil

Under the canopy of Amazonian forests, *Phaeoxantha* beetles emerge only after dark, their metallic bodies glinting as they hunt along sandy and clay-loam riverbanks. This Neotropical genus of eight species ranges across northern South America, from the Guiana Shield through the Amazon basin. Like other Megacephalini, *Phaeoxantha* carries a broad, powerful head built for predation — yet its large eyes are adapted for low-light conditions rather than the bright daylight favoured by its relatives. Larvae develop in burrows sunk into the moist soil of forested floodplains.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Phaeoxantha* s.str. Chaudoir, 1850. Body medium, 10–25 mm, robust, depressed. Coloration metallic, dorsum with darker ground and yellowish markings. Head broad, wider than pronotum, typical Megacephalini facies. Eyes large, protuberant, less so than diurnal Cicindelini, reflecting nocturnal habit. Pronotum subquadrate to slightly transverse. Wings fully developed. Nocturnal; habitat f…

Iresia — 8 species in Brazil

Hidden in the perpetual twilight of Amazonian rainforests, *Iresia* is a small genus of nocturnal tiger beetles that have abandoned the ground entirely, spending their lives on the bark and branches of tropical trees. These slender, metallic beetles — roughly 9–14 mm long — hunt by night on the textured surfaces of forest trunks, while their larvae develop within burrows excavated in bark. Distributed across northern South America, from the Amazon basin and Guiana shield into Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru, *Iresia* represents a remarkable evolutionary departure from the open-ground lifestyle typical of most Cicindelidae.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Iresia* (Iresia) Dejean, 1831 s.str. Body 9–14 mm, elongate-cylindrical (L:W 2–3); fully winged. Coloration metallic. Eyes medium. Labrum transverse. Habitat strictly arboreal: adults nocturnal on bark and branches of Neotropical forest trees; larvae in bark burrows. Mentum tooth moderate to large. First labial palpomere not markedly wider than apical palpomere (J03 = 0). Separation …

Poecilochila — 6 species in Brazil

In the leaf-littered understorey of Neotropical forests, *Poecilochila* beetles move after dark, hunting from low vegetation and forest floor alike. This small genus of around four species spans the Neotropical region, their metallic bodies gleaming against bark and foliage in torchlight. Semi-arboreal habits set *Poecilochila* apart from most ground-hunting tiger beetles, with larvae developing in soil close to plant bases. Medium-bodied and fully winged, these nocturnal hunters represent a distinctive thread in the rich Odontocheilina radiation of the Americas.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Poecilochila* (Poecilochila) Rivalier, 1969 s.str. Body medium, 9–13 mm; habitus cylindrical, elongate-compact (L:W ratio 2–3). Coloration metallic with pale spots. Labrum subquadrate. Eyes medium, moderately protuberant. Pronotum slightly elongate, sides weakly rounded. Elytra elongate, fully developed; hind wings fully developed (macropterous). Activity nocturnal; semi-arboreal. Lar…

Micromentignatha — 1 species in Brazil

*Micromentignatha* is a small, metallic tiger beetle genus endemic to Australia, comprising four described species inhabiting open, wet ground on bare sandy or clay substrates. These nocturnal hunters are distinguished by their reduced mentum-tooth and small jaw structures, traits reflected directly in the genus name. Established by Sumlin in 1981 with *Cicindela leai* Sloane, 1905 as type species, the genus remains one of Australia's more compact cicindelid lineages.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Micromentignatha* Sumlin, 1981 Body small, 8–14 mm, depressed-elongate, metallic. Head wider than pronotum; eyes medium. Labrum subquadrate. Mentum-tooth and mandibles relatively small — diagnostic for genus (cf. etymology: *mikrós* + *méntum* + *gnáthos*). Fully winged. Nocturnal. Restricted to bare sandy or clay substrates, Australia. Four species; type species *Cicindela leai* Sloa…

Oxygoniola — 1 species in Brazil

On leaf-littered trails in Neotropical forest, *Oxygoniola* is a small, metallic tiger beetle of Amazonian shadows. Representing a compact, oval-bodied lineage allied to *Oxygonia*, it inhabits forest floors across Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Nocturnal and rarely encountered, this diminutive genus rewards patient observers in the wet-season night.

Genus diagnosis: DIAGNOSIS — *Oxygoniola* W.Horn, 1892. Body 8–12 mm, oval, metallic, fully winged. Labrum subquadrate. Pronotal sculpture angular, diminutive relative to *Oxygonia*. Nocturnal; forest-floor habitat. Separated from *Oxygonia* by aedeagal morphology and proportionally compact habitus. Eyes large. No confusion genera recorded within Odontocheilina for this taxon.
