Genus
Oxycheila
56 species
*Oxycheila* Dejean, 1825 is a robust, metallic Neotropical tiger beetle genus of approximately 52 species, haunting moist riparian banks and humid forest floors across South America. Nocturnal pursuit hunters, adults shelter near clay-loam substrates where larvae excavate vertical burrows. Males bear strikingly elongated mandibles, a sexually dimorphic feature linked to copulatory grasping behavior.
Diagnosis
DIAGNOSIS — *Oxycheila* Dejean, 1825. Body 12–22 mm, robust, metallic, oval (L:W <2.0); labrum dagger-shaped; mandibles sexually dimorphic (♂ elongated); nocturnal; larvae in vertical clay burrows. Tribal characters follow Oxycheilini.
