Genus
Cephalota
37 species
*Cephalota* Dokhtouroff, 1883 is a small Palearctic genus of tiger beetles adapted to open, arid landscapes across Eurasia. These dark, matte-bodied beetles measure 10–16 mm and are immediately recognizable by their disproportionately large head — wider than the pronotum — a feature unique among related Cicindelina. Nocturnal hunters, they patrol bare sand, sandy-clay, and saline sandy substrates where few competitors venture after dark. Fully winged and cursorial, *Cephalota* represents a striking ecological specialization within the predominantly diurnal tiger beetle radiation.
Diagnosis
DIAGNOSIS — *Cephalota* Dokhtouroff, 1883 (s.str.) Body 10–16 mm, oval, L:W ratio 2–3. Coloration dark, matte, without conspicuous metallic gloss or white elytral maculation. Head distinctly large, wider than pronotum — diagnostic for genus. Eyes large, protuberant. Pronotum subquadrate, narrower than head. Elytra fully developed; flight wings present. Labrum transverse. Activity nocturnal. Substrate: bare sand, sandy-clay, or saline sandy. — Separated from *Calomera* by absence of distinct pale elytral spots and larger head-to-pronotum ratio; from *Cassolaia* by matte (not metallic-iridescent) dorsal surface and nocturnal activity pattern.
Etymology
From Greek *kephalḗ* (head) + suffix -ota — "head-bearing" or "head-prominent".
